One of the number one questions I get asked when couples are booking their weddings is, “What exactly is a bridal session?” Such a valid question as bridal sessions are not the trending topic in bridal magazines these days.
Bridal sessions originally began in Europe and were commonly used in the South. Bridal sessions were a time for the bride to get dolled up with her hair and makeup done, put on her dress, and have the focus solely on her. Traditionally these photos would be kept secret until the day of and then one would be placed out on the wedding day for guests to admire. These also were given to parents and grandparents on the day of as a gift.
You are now probably asking yourself, “Well, why should I do one of these? Won’t I get pictures of myself in my dress on my wedding day?” Yes, but let me give you 3 reasons why it’s a really good idea to do a bridal session...
1.) You get to see your wedding day look before the actual wedding day. It is incredibly rare for a bride to have her hair and makeup done the way she is envisioning it with her dress on before the big day. A bridal session is a great way to see all the elements together and make any final tweaks you see fit. Think of it as a “dress” rehearsal (get it haha?!). Maybe that dark contouring you’ve been imagining doesn’t actually compliment your dress like you thought it would. Or you decide instead of an up-do, you’d like to swap it for messy curls. This is the perfect opportunity to see how your beauty elements work together.
2.) This is an opportunity for stress free photos. Of course on the day of you are going to receive plenty of photos of you in your dress, but behind the scenes you’re going to be fretting about timelines, is this person where they need to be, etc. And don’t even get me started on Oklahoma weather. A bridal session is going to let you capture your beautiful look without all that added pressure mentioned above. You’re going to actually enjoy yourself and feel free which translates beautifully in photos. Plus, this is such a great time for practice posing; you’ll get to show your hunny a thing or two about being a model when the day comes!
3.) Like I mentioned above, traditionally these make great gifts for family members. Imagine gifting your parents a photo of you on the day of with a special memento or in a special place that is near and dear to their heart. It’s an extra special gift for them to cherish the moment their child was at their most incredible.
Hopefully now you have a better understanding of just what is a bridal session as well as some reasons why you might choose to have them done. Or, maybe you’re a little less confused about this old Southern tradition – if that’s the case, great! Either way, bridal portraits are just another way to capture memories of an absolutely beautiful season of life, so have fun and enjoy yourself!
